The Blue Jays scrimmaged the McDonogh 35 Roneagles Thursday afternoon, August 21 at Tad Gormley Stadium, giving football fans a first glimpse of what the season holds in store.

It was also the first time fans of Blue Jay football got a good look at head coach Mark Songy, who came on board just over a month ago.

With the coaches from both teams on the field and watching their charges closely, the scrimmage generated numerous plays that were met with cheers and jeers. The scrimmage was a full-contact contest although no one, except a couple of sports reporters, was keeping score. Senior quarterback Trey LaForge connected early on with senior tight end Foster Moreau, who scampered down the sideline and into the end zone, dragging a Roneagle with him. Senior running backs Charles Jackson and Chris Mills took turns running the ball and chewing up chunks of yardage. Defensively, senior linebacker Robert Lobrano and senior defensive back Jacob Pesquié stood out as did several other Blue Jays.

“We made a lot of mistakes and missed a lot of tackles,” Songy told Rod Walker of the N.O. Advocate. “We are forcing ourselves to making big plays instead of those little plays along the way. Way too many penalties. But you know scrimmages are for that. I think when I go back and look at the film I will find some guys who we didn’t know if they would be able to play a lot who will be able to step up and play for us.”

The varsity football team will face Edna Karr in the Kiwanis Jamboree on Thursday evening with kickoff set for 5:30 at Joe Yenni Stadium. Pre-sale admission price is set at $5 each for adults, students, and children (ages 8 and up). Pre-sale tickets will be available for purchase at the switchboard Tuesday thru Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and in the student commons on Thursday during lunch. All tickets purchased at the gate are $8 each. Please note that both student and faculty IDs as well as season passes will not be accepted at the gate.
