2015-16 Alumni Service Corps (ASC): Alexander Nay, Jay Napolitano, and Ryan Migliore

Three members of the Class of 2011 — Ryan Migliore, Jay Napolitano and Alexander Nay — recently began their year of service to Jesuit as part of the Alumni Service Corps (ASC).

The ASC is a volunteer opportunity available to Jesuit graduates to devote a year of their lives in service and thanksgiving for their Jesuit education. It is a unique opportunity for participants to give back to their alma mater during a year between college and a career or graduate school. In addition to teaching, each ASC member will tutor students, assist with co-curricular activities and events, participate in retreats and service days, and work in various sectors of the school.

Ryan Migliore ’11 is a member of Jesuit’s Alumni Service Corps and teaches Latin I. Mr. Migliore is involved with the Classics Society, Chorus, Philelectic Society, and Quiz Bowl. Previously, he worked with Jesuit’s Operation Upgrade and Catholic Charities’ ESL Program. He earned a B.A. in classics and Latin from Tulane University. “Even when I was a student at Jesuit, I thought that I wanted to be a teacher. I’ve really enjoyed teaching pre-freshmen Latin I and getting to know students through various clubs.”

Jay Napolitano, Jr. ’11 is a member of Jesuit’s Alumni Service Corps and teaches Chemistry and is the assistant coach for varsity soccer. He earned a B.S. in biological sciences from Louisiana State University. “Giving this school my time and energy for the advancement of the kids has been a humbling experience. I chose to do this program in my year between college and medical school to open my eyes to the work environment and also gain valuable insight as a volunteer.”

Alexander Nay ’11 is a member of Jesuit’s Alumni Service Corps and teaches Physical Science. He is also involved with the Student Council and Pro-Life Club. He earned a B.S. from Louisiana State University. “ASC has been a great experience so far, I’ve had the opportunity to really immerse myself in teaching others while gaining the satisfaction of helping out my alma mater as well. It’s great to learn from the best, and the teachers that influenced me as a student are now just as great of an influence to me now as a teacher. It’s a real blessing.”

ASC Director Michael Prados ’83 serves as a guide and mentor for the alumni participants. “Since its inception, the program has had a profound effect on both the students and the ASC participants themselves. The young alums have put a great deal of energy and effort into everything they’ve done, whether in or out of the classroom.  They’ve been role models and mentors to the students and an inspiration to the faculty.”

While the ASC began in the 2013-14 school year at Jesuit, similar alumni service programs have been in existence for many years at other Jesuit high schools around the country. These programs are founded on the four components of service, community, simplicity, and spirituality. Both the schools and the participants have benefited greatly from this rewarding relationship.
