Academic Support Program
The Academic Support Program is designed to assist new students (freshmen and pre-freshmen) in making a smooth and successful transition to Jesuit High School. Some students need assistance with organization, while others need to be assisted because of a weak academic foundation or issues with memory/study skills. The goal of the program is to teach students to become independent in their studies so that they can be successful at Jesuit and beyond.
Typical entry into the program is through teacher referrals after the first two weeks of school, although it remains voluntary for these students. Participation becomes mandatory if a student fails two or more subjects at the end of the quarter.
Peer Mentoring
The main component of the Academic Support Program is after school peer mentoring, which takes place after school. Juniors and seniors volunteer to assist younger students who are having difficulty organizing and prioritizing assignments and preparing for quizzes and tests.
The upperclassmen and supervising teachers are available daily Monday through Thursday from 3:15 – 4: 15 pm.
Faculty Support
Students also meet with faculty support personnel individually to work on organization and study skills. Part of the process involves goal setting to make a game plan for upcoming academic assessments and assignments. Students are also encouraged to develop an environment at home conducive to study. Teachers are also consulted in the particular classes in which the students are struggling.
