Lacrosse Jays Post a Win in Two Cities on the Same Day

Two defenders close in as senior midfielder Dominic Sunseri unleashes a wicked shot , scoring the first of his two goals in a victory over St. Thomas More on Saturday, Feb. 20.
Ernie Banks, the famous Chicago Cub who uttered the now famous words, “Let’s play two!,” would be extra proud.
The Jesuit lacrosse team played single games in separate cities on Saturday, Feb. 20, and returned home with two more victories in their travel bags. First they beat Loyola Academy (Shreveport), 16-1, in a game that was played in Alexandria. Then, they drove to Lafayette to face St. Thomas More. The Jays won the second contest, 14-4.

Against Loyola, senior Max Murret scored four goals and junior Michael Smart had three. Senior Kyle Westholz and juniors Briggs Lucia and Noah Martin had two goals apiece. The other goals were scored by senior Kent Flower, sophomore Aiden Roberts, and junior Parker Simoneaux. Martin and Sunseri each had three assists.
Simoneaux scooped up seven ground balls. Five of them were on face-offs. Senior Gray Cressy led the defensive effort with four ground ball pick-ups and two takeaways. Sunseri tallied three ground balls.
Senior Rob Hinyub was stellar in goal, giving up just a single score while saving 11. The Jays won 13 of 18 face-offs and scored six of the eight times that penalties called against the opposition gave the Jays a man-up advantage.

Murret, who is a team captain, scored another four goals against St. Thomas More. Sunseri and Simoneaux scored twice against the Cougars. Luccia, Martin, Westholz and senior Jeremy Scheffler had the other goals. Martin also had two assists.
Junior Bennett Faust picked up eight ground balls, all of them on face-offs. Cressy and Martin had five ground balls each. Murret had four, while junior Dieter Hugel, Parker, and Hinyub had three apiece. Hinyub got the win in goal.
Jesuit did not surrender a goal in five man-down situations.
District Opener Next
The Blue Jays open district play on Wednesday, February 24, against Northshore at Muss Bertolino Stadium in Kenner. The opening face-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
