Student Council E-Board Members Polish Their Leadership Skills
The Student Council executive board suspended their summer break to seek guidance from alumni and community leaders at the Student Council Executive Board Leadership Workshop.
The purpose of the workshop is to acquaint student leaders with the rich tradition of Blue Jay Spirit at Jesuit from those who have walked the leadership path before. The workshop uses a variety of activities to deepen the student leaders’ understanding of their mission at the outset of the academic year.
The morning session began with a presentation by alumni director Mat Grau ’68, focusing on student life at Jesuit through the years. Student leaders were asked to consider how difficult Blue Jay Spirit is to define and to reflect on their role in preserving that Spirit in their various activities as student council leaders. The presentation sparked a lively round-table discussion featuring three alumni — Bubby Valentino ’65, Brian Gibbs ’90, and Matt Robért ’12 — whose experiences at Jesuit shed light on the formation of Blue Jay Spirit in their respective eras.

Afternoon panel guests featured, from left, Judge Dennis Waldron, Dr. Jennifer Couvillon, and Lt. Colonel Brandon Gregoire ’91.
After enjoying the company of their guests during lunch at Katie’s Restaurant, the leadership team resumed in the afternoon with a panel discussion featuring notable leaders in the New Orleans community. Those special guests included Dr. Jennifer Couvillon, Lt. Col. Brandon Gregoire ’91, and Honorable Dennis Waldron (a former Orleans Parish Criminal District Court Judge, now retired). Their combined experiences in leadership were a valuable resource to today’s Blue Jays.
The workshop was co-hosted by the student activities office and the office of institutional advancement. It has been a prominent feature of student leadership formation at Jesuit for the last six years. At the conclusion of the work day, the executive board began a weekend planning retreat to develop themes and activities for the 2016-2017 school year.
