Bowling Rolls Into Season Opener Against St. Aug
After several months of practice, Jesuit varsity bowling opens its season against St. Augustine on Thursday, Jan. 19. The bowlers will compete in 12 matches during the 2016-17 season, including an invitational tournament in Baton Rouge.
During his first year as head coach, Todd Bourgeois ’88 led the Blue Jays to a 7-4 record. The team advanced to the LHSAA Bi-Regional tournament in Baton Rouge, but was knocked out of the running for state playoffs by the top-ranked Brother Martin team.
“In 2016, we were focused on learning about the sport of bowling,” said Bourgeois. “While the team worked on individual form and mechanics, we also took a behind-the-scenes look at the bowling alley itself, equipment, and even how bowling balls and pins are made.”
Though the team is down two graduated Blue Jays, including Peyton Hidalgo who qualified to compete as one of 11 singles bowlers in last year’s state finals, the ten-man roster is made up of six returning bowlers and four new additions. With fresh talent comes a new look, as the team not only modernizes its bowling jerseys, but also advances its appreciation of the game in the upcoming season.
“This year, our focus is expanding,” said Bourgeois. “We are working to develop a greater knowledge of the equipment, lane conditions, and the mental aspect of the sport of bowling.”
