Outstanding defense was the backbone of Jesuit’s 10-7 jamboree victory over Hahnville High School (HHS) on Thursday Night at HHS Tigers Stadium. Granted, the patient offense, led by a Max Scheurich field goal and a Willie Robinson touchdown run, was good enough to escape the Tigers. The performance by the Blue Jay defense, though, which allowed the Tigers just 13 yards of total offense, may have people checking the record books after the game.

Already improving from last year’s 2-9 season, the Blue Jays traveled proudly back to Carrollton and Banks, whereas last year’s jamboree ended in a 14-14 tie.

Through the Lens…

With 2:30 remaining and a 3-point lead, solid downfield blocking from quarterback Robert McMahon helps seal the deal for Jesuit as Willie Robinson scampers for a 30-yard run and a first down.

In His Words…

Although the win doesn’t count towards regular season record, head football coach Mark Songy called it “a momentum builder.”

“I found out a lot about our team tonight…we were really scrappy out there,” Coach Songy said after the game. “We were lights-out defensively against an explosive team, one that will go far in the playoffs. We had to come from behind and dig deep to get the W. I’m pumped about that, and I really do love this team.”

On the Horizon…

For their home opener at Tad Gormley, the Blue Jays will face the Eagles of Warren Easton on Thursday, Aug. 30. The Jays and Eagles will be featured in NOLA.com’s fifth season of broadcasting football. What an exciting game it will be as Jesuit faces a Warren Easton team that is coming off of a 10-3 overall record last season. The Eagles are projected to be a top 3 team in 2018 by NOLA.com’s Top 18 list. “Consistency,” said Coach Songy. “It’s going to be about consistency in how we prepare [for Easton] this upcoming week. And our bunch prepares really well.”
