Despite 41-19 Loss, Wrestlers Go Back and Forth with Crusaders
The Jesuit High School (JHS) wrestling team fought hard in its dual at Brother Martin on Wednesday, Jan. 9, but the Blue Jays fell to the Crusaders, 41-19. The Jays were given a tough task—beating the unbeaten defending state champions on their home mat, and doing so without two starters.
Despite the 12-0 lead Br. Martin held before the first match, JHS proved its ability to compete with its district rivals. Over the course of the dozen matches wrestled on Wednesday night, the Jays and Crusaders went back and forth. Jesuit’s 106-pounder Sam Dreuil started the non-forfeited matches with an impressive major-decision victory, and the Jays would go on to win every other match that followed.

In His Words…
“Judging things on progress,” explained head coach Sheridan Moran, “Dennis Dougherty at 182 and Charlie Cyrus at 152 had a lot of good strides, even though they lost their matches. Their fight, their positioning, and their understanding has greatly improved. All those things are good things. And of course, I’m proud of our seniors Sam Dreuil (106), Tony Serio (120), Luke Eccles (132), Colby Queyrouze (145), DJ Ferrier (170), and Jack Grady (195) for winning their matches and doing their jobs.”

Next up for the wrestling team is the Ken Cole Invitational hosted by Comeaux High School on Jan. 11-12. The following weekend, Jan. 18-19, will see the Jays compete in the 46th Louisiana Classic at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales, La.
