Tennis Messes With Texas in Opener
Jesuit’s tennis team kicked off the season with a dual meet win over Nolan Catholic (TX) on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the City Park Pepsi Tennis Center.
The Jays swept nine singles and five doubles matches against the visiting Vikings from Forth Worth. Junior James Henican led the way, subbing in at Line 1 singles for JoJo Sandoz, who was down 4-3 in the first set when he retired due to lingering effects from the flu. Nolan High’s coach, Lan Nguyen, graciously agreed to allow that substitution in order to get more work for his top player. Henican came in cold and took the first set 7-5 before closing out the match with a 6-1 second set.
In addition to Henican, Sid Trouard, David Webster, Tom Levy, David Nimmo, Wes Melito, Keating Landry, William Bostick, and James Bostick all picked up singles wins.
In doubles play, Pierce Westbrook and Dexter Webster posted an impressive win on Line 1, while Henican teamed up with Nick Crockens to win on Line Two. On Line 3, seniors Cole LaCour and Colin Meyer won their match in an 8-0 shutout. On Line 4 it was David Webster and Melito teaming up for the win while the brothers Bostick rounded out the doubles play with a win on Line Five.
Sandoz and junior Luke Russo, who was also suffering from the flu, were the only varsity players who did not record a win in the match.
Jesuit returns to the courts for a dual meet against Country Day on Thursday, Feb. 28 at the UNO Tennis Center. Match time is 4:00 p.m.
