Jays Defeat Helen Cox in Home Opener, 42-18
Senior defensive lineman Evan Taffaro and sophomore linebacker Dennis Dougherty made interceptions that led to the opening offensive touchdown and resulted in the final score of the first half, a “pick six.” The defensive effort freed up the offense to score five total touchdowns en route to Jesuit’s 42-18 victory over Helen Cox.
“We’ve been real happy with our defense,” coach Mark Songy told NOLA.com after his team moved to 2-1 on the season. “We just can’t leave them on the field as long as we did (in the Jays’ first two games).”
Quarterback Grant Jordan, wide receiver Luke LaForge, and tailback Jordan Hughes put on a clinic to give Jesuit a smooth balance of positive yards in both the pass and run game. Jordan completed 80 percent of his passes and finished the game with 180 total yards. Kicker Aidan Corbello joined the Individual Records list for most extra points (6) in a single game.
After the home-opener victory, the Blue Jays (2-1) return to Tad Gormley Stadium for their district opener against the Brother Martin Crusaders. Note that both student ID’s and season passes will be accepted at the gate for this district contest.
