Hoopsters Notch Two Wins Midway Through District
As the Jays begin to face district opponents for the second time this season, they do so with a pair of wins putting a little spring in their step. On Friday night, the basketball team defeated John Curtis, 34-33, and then on Monday, downed non-district opponent Phoenix High School, 50-35.

Against Curtis, the Jays held on for victory thanks to Luke LaForge’s game-winning free throws with under a minute remaining. The Jays had jumped out to a big lead entering the fourth quarter after outscoring Curtis 9-1 in the third. Curtis nudged their way back into the game in the final minutes to have a chance at the end, but the Jays defense held on and thwarted the Patriot’s final shots.
Kyle Haupt led the team in scoring with 12 points. Christopher Gillen led the defensive effort and added 6 points of his own. Laforge also pulled down 12 rebounds.
On Monday night, the Jays jumped out ahead early to earn another win against Phoenix High School in Plaquemines Parish, 50-35. Their 11-2 first quarter run set the tone for the game. Jack Lo was the point leader with 13 points, and the team pulled down an impressive 39 total rebounds.
On Friday, the Jays will tip off against Holy Cross in the Gayle & Tom Benson Arena at 7 p.m.
