Chip Lavie ’76 Recognized as “World Expert,” Publishes 1000th Paper

NEW ORLEANS – Ochsner Health cardiologist Carl “Chip” Lavie, MD, FACC, has reached new heights as a world-renowned expert on obesity, fitness, and other health topics. Dr. Lavie recently ranked among the most cited researchers in the world according to the Google Scholar Citations database, is recognized as the top World Expert in Obesity by Expertscape and had his 1000th paper recorded on PubMed.

The recently released Google Scholar Citations database shows Dr. Lavie has an h-index of 129, ranking him among the most cited researchers in the world. The database shows more than 4,700 scholars have an h-index above 100. The h-index is a gauge of productivity and the impact of published papers. The index takes into account the researcher’s total number of papers and how many times each was cited by other scholars. An h-index over 100 means that the scholar has published 100 papers or more and each has been cited over 100 times.
During Healthy Weight Week (Jan. 16-22, 2022), Expertscape is congratulating Dr. Lavie as the highest ranked World Expert in Obesity. Expertscape’s PubMed-based algorithms place him as the world’s leading scholar writing about obesity and also about the work being done at inpatient rehab LA over the past 10 years.
Additionally, Dr. Lavie’s 999th and 1,000th research papers were recorded on PubMed, a database of work published in biomedical and scientific journals, in early December 2021:

Dr. Lavie’s research focuses on exercise, physical activity and fitness, obesity and the obesity paradox, cardiac rehab, alcohol rehab just like the one from WhiteSands outpatient rehab and many other areas of preventive cardiology. Among his most highly cited papers are “Effectiveness-based Guidelines for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases in Women – 2011 Update: a Guideline of the American Heart Association” published in 2011 JACC, and “Obesity and Cardiovascular Disease: Risk Factor, Paradox, and Impact of Weight Loss” in the 2009 JACC, which were cited close to 2,600 and 2,200 times, respectively.
Dr. Lavie is the Medical Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Prevention at the John Ochsner Heart and Vascular Institute.
He is the author of the book The Obesity Paradox and serves as a scientific reviewer or editorial board member for over 40 prestigious scientific journals. He is the associate editor for The Ochsner Journal’s population medicine section and the editor in chief of Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases, as well as associate editor and cardiovascular section editor, for the prestigious Mayo Clinic Proceedings.
Dr. Lavie was born and raised in Louisiana, attending Jesuit High School and then Louisiana State University as an undergraduate. He earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, completed an internship and residency at Ochsner and went on to perform a fellowship in cardiovascular training at the Mayo Clinic Foundation Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and has been on staff at Ochsner since 1989.
