Marking the Ignatian Year, Nine Churches Walk Tradition Returns
In celebration of the Ignatian Year, the Jesuit High School community will observe the Nine Churches Walk tradition on Good Friday with an Ignatian twist: this year, the walk will begin and end at Jesuit churches. A beloved annual occurrence that had to be partially virtual for the past two years, the Nine Churches Walk provides participants an opportunity to physically participate in the Stations of the Cross by visiting historical New Orleans churches in pilgrimage along the way of the cross.
In addition to praying one or two Stations of the Cross at each church, participants also listen to a brief history of the parish itself given by pilgrimage history Brandon Briscoe ’98. Pilgrims have a few moments to pray in the church before the group makes its way to the next parish.
This year, the route begins at Holy Name Church on the campus of Loyola University where participants should gather at 8:15 a.m. The pilgrimage itself will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Although Good Friday is a fasting day, participants may choose to bring a light snack and water for the walk. It is also recommended to check the weather forecast to plan for rain gear, sunscreen, or a hat. Participants should also be prepared to walk 5-6 miles through the course of the morning. As in previous years, the walk ends at Immaculate Conception Jesuit Church around 1:30 p.m., and participants should arrange their own ride back to their vehicles after the walk.
