Back-to-back Victories Propel Rugby to State Championship
On Saturday, April 23, the Blue Jays will take on cross-town rival Brother Martin in the rugby state championship. The match will be played at the NOLA Gold stadium as a curtain raiser for the match between the Gold and the Austin Gilgronis. The state championship match kicks off at 3:30 p.m.
The Jays, who are unbeaten (8-0-1) and ranked 15th in the nation, are presently in fine form and playing champagne rugby. On April 8, they closed out the regular season with a gritty 34-21 victor over St. Paul’s in Covington. Then, this past Monday, they bested the Bayou Hurricanes in the state semifinal match, 59-0. Over their past three matches, the Jays have scored 21 tries (touchdowns) and have allowed only three. Over the course of the season, the Jays have outscored their opponents 394-100.
The Jays know, however, that these stats will offer but cold comfort should fail to return the championship brass to its rightful home at Carrollton & Banks. Blue Jay senioroutside center Nick Ferina, the team’s captain, points to the 2007 New England Patriots: “Everyone remembers them for being the ‘undefeated’ team that lost the Super Bowl. That won’t be us.”
The Blue Jays have won more state championships in rugby (11) than any other team. They need your support to help them earn number 12.
