Soccer Picks up Mardi Gras Day Victory to Advance to Semifinals
Following three consecutive LHSAA playoff victories, the soccer team advanced tonight to the 2024 Division I semifinals after a convincing 3-1 win over St. Amant. In light of the Blue Jays’ strong season record of 19-1-2, the Gators brought competitive play to Lafreniere to contest the Jays’ top-ranked post-season position, but stalwart performances across the entire field of play ensured a Jesuit victory on Shrove Tuesday.
The Blue Jays’ first successful attempt on St. Amant’s goal came when junior Bryce Barrere and senior Jack Kessels set up senior Michael Stackpole for a mid-range shot that found the back of the net. Before halftime, senior Aidan Obletz’s shot from well outside the box put the Jays up 2-0 as they headed to the sideline.
Though the Gators prevented a shut-out with a goal in the second half after 13 unsuccessful attempts, a thrilling header from sophomore Donnie Dovie marked Jesuit’s third and final goal of the afternoon.
Coaches and players alike testified to the Jays’ unyielding defensive play, with head coach Hubie Collins telling Nola.com, “We pride ourselves on our defense. Our motto is that if you don’t give up any goals, you put yourself in position to win.”
Also contributing to the important playoff victory were the many parents, alumni, and students who showed up to support the soccer team on Mardi Gras. Faithful Gizzard members and all Blue Jay soccer fans should check the Jesuit website for details on the team’s next matchup against Dutchtown, who defeated Lafayette High School 1-0 this evening.
