Jesuit-based Retif Oil showcased resilience and determination in the American Legion State tournament at Tigue Moore Field in Lafayette, ultimately finishing as state runner-up.

“I’m proud of the athleticism and character that our athletes displayed throughout this season,” said Kenny Goodlet, Jesuit’s baseball coach. “They did a tremendous job of upholding Jesuit’s tradition of playing first-class Legion baseball.”

The Oilers began their journey with a commanding 9-3 victory over the Southland Hogs on Sunday night, demonstrating their offensive prowess.

Retif Oil sealed the game in the top of the eighth inning with a six-run surge. Key hits included Sean Maher and Michael Brothers‘ RBI singles, a two-run double by Derek Delatte, and an RBI from Griffin Jeandron. Jackson Dugan earned the win in relief, following a strong start by Connor Donnelly. Despite a dramatic two-run homer for the Hogs in the seventh inning, the Oilers secured the win.

In the next game, Retif Oil edged the Crowley Millers 5-3, moving them within one win of the championship. The Oilers took an early lead with Donnelly’s RBI single and Delatte’s two-run single. Although Crowley responded, Retif Oil regained control with additional RBIs from Delatte and Marshal Serio. Brandon Thomas earned the win, and Calvin Magee secured a crucial save.

Despite a 10-0 loss to the Bossier Phillies in the following game, Retif Oil remained in contention for the championship. Bossier’s early six-run inning set the tone, and the Oilers struggled offensively with only one hit from Tyler Sciambra. Jacob Chan put up a strong showing from the mound despite the tough game.

In the championship game, Retif Oil fell just short, losing 4-5 to the Bossier Phillies. The Oilers took an early lead with an RBI groundout by Joe Bosco and extended it with a two-run single by Donnelly. However, Bossier rallied in the sixth inning with a two-out, three-run surge, including a game-tying single by Jackson Jones and a go-ahead double by Tucker McCabe.

Despite getting two runners on base in the sixth inning, Jesuit’s players could not close the gap. Brothers stood out with two hits and two runs. Jake Moreci pitched four innings, and Magee took the loss in relief.

Retif Oil’s performance in the tournament was commendable, especially considering the team consisted entirely of underclassmen. The Oilers’ record of 10-5-1 reflects the depth of Jesuit’s baseball program and stands as a testament to the team’s terrific potential for the 2024-25 school year.
