With Blue Jays committing to serve around the world every year, students often spend their summer serving others right here in New Orleans. This year, many rising seniors spent their summer living out Jesuit’s mission of becoming men for others by serving at the Good Shepherd School’s summer camp.

Blue Jays have volunteered at the school for decades since its founding in 2021. Their dedication has contributed to provided young students with a safe, enriching environment, reinforcing academic skills and fostering personal growth.

The Good Shepherd School, founded by former Jesuit High School president Fr. Harry Tompson, S.J., continues to be a beacon of hope for children in New Orleans. Under the leadership of Thomas “Tommy” Moran ’86, the school’s current president and CEO, the school is still expanding its reach, with a new campus on Desire Parkway set to open soon.

Beyond Moran, many of the members of Good Shepherd’s volunteer and administrative leadership are Blue Jay alumni.

Brian Grenrood ’86, the vice president of Good Shepherd’s board of the directors, emphasized the school’s vital role in the community to the Clarion Herald: “This is one of those pillars that can be the groundwork for saving this city and allowing this city to have a future. I want to see New Orleans saved, and Good Shepherd, to me, is one of the ways to save it for future generations.”

Through the efforts of dozens of Jesuit students each year, the commitment of Blue Jay alumni in leadership and faculty positions at Good Shepherd, and the living legacy of Fr. Tompson’s bold vision, Good Shepherd’s mission of breaking the cycle of poverty through education continues to flourish.
