In a thrilling matchup between two Jesuit brother schools, the Blue Jays fell just short in a valiant effort against Jesuit Dallas with 20-28 on the scoreboard at Tad Gormley Stadium. The gridiron meeting was the first in 24 between the two schools. The football team displayed marked moments of brilliance, leaving fans optimistic for the remainder of the season.

The game kicked off with an explosive start for the Jays. On the first play from scrimmage, junior quarterback Taylor Norton connected with junior Roman Larré on a deep pass that went the distance, giving the Blue Jays an early 7-0 lead and electrifying the home crowd. Larré, who stood out throughout the night, proved to be a key playmaker.

The first half saw a back-and-forth battle, but Dallas capitalized on turnovers and penalties to take the lead. Despite the Rangers going on a 28-point run, the Blue Jays’ defense, led by senior linebacker Gio Matranga, never let up, coming up with crucial stops that kept the game within reach.

In the third quarter, the Jays struck back. A well-executed drive ended with a field goal by junior Ethan Cabos, narrowing the lead to 17-28. The Blue Jays continued to chip away at the deficit, showing grit and resilience as they entered the fourth quarter down by just one score following a second field goal from Cabos with three minutes left in the third. The quarter ended with a score of 20-28.

Late in the game, trailing by eight, the Blue Jays mounted a determined drive, showing resilience in the face of mounting pressure.

Norton orchestrated a methodical march downfield, relying on precision passes to Larré, who consistently found openings in the Dallas secondary. Larré’s quick footwork and reliable hands kept the chains moving, while sophomore Ja’ir Burks stepped up with clutch receptions that pushed the Blue Jays deep into Ranger territory. With time running out, Norton kept his composure, evading defenders and delivering key passes under pressure.

As the Blue Jays neared the red zone, the intensity heightened. Facing a third down from midfield with 3:20 on the clock, Norton narrowly avoided a sack, connecting with sophomore Calvin Magee for a crucial first down near the 20.

However, after a scramble by Norton to pick up 5 yards himself, the Ranger defense forced the Jays into a series of hurried throws, disrupting the rhythm. With the game hanging in the balance, Norton launched two well-placed passes toward the end zone, but tight coverage led to back-to-back heartbreaking breakups that sealed the game.

The Blue Jays’ defense fought valiantly throughout the game. Matranga delivered a standout performance, consistently wrapping up Dallas runners and applying pressure in key situations. Even freshmen such as Cole Schmidt played an important role, providing solid coverage and making key tackles against Ranger upperclassmen.

Despite the outcome, the game was a showcase of determination and the close ties between the nation’s Jesuit schools. The Jays now look to regroup and prepare for their next challenge in Thibodaux against E.D. White as they carry the weekend’s lessons forward.
