Dominic Stoner ’20, a biochemistry major with a philosophy minor from the University of Notre Dame, shares his journey of discovering a passion for education through the ASC program.

The Alumni Service Corps (ASC) program at Jesuit has offered me a unique and fulfilling opportunity to explore teaching while contributing to the school’s community. As a graduate with a major in biochemistry and a minor in philosophy from the University of Notre Dame, I never envisioned myself teaching high school. However, people often told me I had a knack for explaining things. Initially, I planned to pursue graduate studies and become a college professor, but my time in biochemistry labs led me to reconsider. With encouragement from my mentors at Jesuit, I’ve found immense satisfaction in teaching high school biology, helping students develop an appreciation for the subject while honing my skills as an educator. Throughout my time in the ASC program, I’ve received invaluable mentorship and support from the Jesuit faculty. My mentor and officemate, Jacob Campos, has been an unbelievable help, guiding me through the highs and lows of my first year of teaching. I can always rely on him for advice, whether it’s explaining concepts or crafting test questions. I’m also deeply grateful to Amy Tassin and Helen Swan for sharing their experience and support during stressful moments. Beyond the classroom, I’ve embraced the school’s community life by participating in Campus Ministry and engaging in Kairos retreats. Living near campus has allowed me to fully immerse myself in Jesuit’s activities, reinforcing my decision to explore teaching as a potential career path. The ASC program not only offers professional development but also fosters a sense of belonging and community, making it an ideal avenue for those considering a future in education.

The Alumni Service Corps gives Blue Jay alums the opportunity to devote a year of their lives to their alma mater between completing college and moving on to graduate school or a career. The program is founded on the four components of service, community, simplicity, and spirituality.

Program participants teach two classes, tutor students, and assist with co-curricular activities, retreats, days of reflection, service days, dances, class-level events, and other programs and activities throughout the school.
