Super Bowl LIX received a vibrant introduction from one of New Orleans’ most celebrated entertainers: Harry Connick, Jr. ’85. A proud alumnus of Jesuit, Connick brought the spirit of Mardi Gras and jazz music to the world stage with a performance that was truly unforgettable.
Connick was a student who balanced his passion for music with academic pursuits. By night, he performed in jazz clubs. By day, he was a legendary member of the Philelectic Society. The piano, his first and primary instrument, was central to his musical journey. As a senior in 1985, Connick organized concerts for the student body in Traditions Courtyard, including the memorable “Harry for Africa” concert, which combined music with a canned goods collection to raise awareness for starvation.

“One great thing about the Jesuits [is that] they recognize the strengths in people and help to develop those things.” –Connick during a school tour in 2017
Connick delivered an upbeat rendition of Professor Longhair’s “Go to the Mardi Gras,” accompanied by Leroy Jones on trumpet, Freddie Lonzo on trombone, and the Spirit of New Orleans Gospel Choir. Connick concluded the segment with a spirited welcome: “Welcome to New Orleans, and welcome to Super Bowl 59!”
This year marks the 40-year reunion for the Class of 1985, including Connick and his classmates.
