The Jesuit Blue Jays won the 2018 Lacrosse District Championship with two victories in April against Holy Cross and Brother Martin. Next up is the state semi-final game against the St. Paul’s Wolves on Saturday, April 28 at 7:00 p.m. The semi-final will take place in Lafayette at St. Thomas More School.

District Final – Jesuit vs. Brother Martin

Sophomore Clark Romig (#16) celebrates after assisting a goal in the district finals. The sophomore was a crucial contributor in the game as he led the Jays with three assists and scored a goal of his own.

On April 21 at Muss Bertolino Stadium, the Jays defeated the Brother Martin Crusaders, 9-6, to win the district title.

Team scoring leaders were senior Will Simon and junior Elliott Hattier, who scored two goals each.  Michael Schmidt, Jack Unger, Ross Champagne, Clark Romig, and Zach Charneco added one goal apiece.

Romig, a sophomore, led the team with three assists as senior Aiden Roberts also had an assist.

Senior James Bradford carried the squad with an unheard-of 12 ground balls in the game. Romig added 10, and Champagne picked up seven more. These three players alone totaled more ground balls than the entire Brother Martin team. In all, the Jays picked up 63 ground balls compared to the Crusaders’ 27.

Face-off specialists Romig and Unger led the team to win 14 out of 18 face-offs in the game.

Senior Ryan Hamilton executed nine saves in goal to keep his save percentage at a solid rate of 60% for the year against league competition.

District Semifinal – Jesuit vs. Holy Cross

On April 10, the varsity lacrosse team defeated district rival Holy Cross by a score of 21-2 in the opening round of the district playoffs. The game was played at Muss Bertolino.

Ten different players scored for Jesuit, led by an amazing performance from junior Ross Champagne, who scored seven goals on nine shots. Freshman Evan Centola and junior Zach Charneco added three goals apiece; and senior Will Simon scored twice. Scoring single goals were Elliott Hattier, Max Milano, Colin Haag, Clark Romig, and long-sticks Luke Powers and James Bradford.

Senior attackman Colin Haag led the team with three assists on the night, while sophomore Clark Romig tacked on a pair of assists. Several players added a single assist in the game as the entire team focused on passing to open teammates: Elliott Hattier, Max Milano, Ross Champagne, Will Simon, Jude Donnaud, Aiden Roberts, Blaise McDaniel, and Zach Charneco.

Face-off specialists Romig and Jack Unger each had nine ground ball pickups in the game. With their success, the Jays won 18 out of 25 face-offs in the game.

Senior Ryan Hamilton had four saves in goal.

The Jays were able to successfully clear the ball into their offensive zone on 11 out of 14 attempts, which is an incredible 78% success rate.
