- Today’s Black History Month fact of the day, brought to you by the St. Peter Claver Club: One of a thousand people of African descent living in the Massachusetts colony, Onesimus was a gift to the Puritan church minister Cotton Mather from his congregation in 1706. Onesimus told Mather about the centuries old tradition of inoculation practiced in Africa. By extracting the material from an infected person and scratching it into the skin of an uninfected person, you could deliberately introduce smallpox to the healthy individual making them immune. Mather convinced a local doctor to experiment with the procedure when a smallpox epidemic hit Boston in 1721. Despite skepticism among critics, Onesimus’ traditional African practice was eventually used to inoculate American soldiers during the Revolutionary War, introducing the concept of inoculation to the United States.
Results:
- Congratulations goes out to Elijah Morgan who was named by the basketball coaches of district 9-5A as the Most Valuable Player of the district.
- On Thursday, the varsity baseball team defeated Franklinton 10-2. Brennen Berggren was the winning pitcher. Will Moran and Tripp Haddad had multiple hits, including a Haddad homerun.
- This past Saturday, two teams of Jesuit student attorneys competed in the Region 4 mock trial tournament held at the Jefferson Parish courthouse in Gretna. Fourteen teams participated in a mock case involving a wrongful death resulting from alleged college hazing. Jesuit entered two teams. After two preliminary rounds, the more experienced team of attorneys Bradley Fugetta, Donovan Reynolds, and Hunter Richardson, and witnesses, Sebastian Mac, Ben Wombacher, and Owen Ettinger made it to the semi-final round, in which they defeated a team from Louise S. McGehee School. The final round was a repeat of last year’s regional final. In an extremely close contest, Jesuit narrowly lost to Haynes Academy but still advances to the State Mock Trial competition on March 30 in Lafayette.
Jesuit’s younger team of attorneys Michael Paul Fine, Ahmed Almoaswes, and Dalton Haydel, and witnesses Caleb Walsh, Jacob D’Amico, Daniel Lee, Preston Rymney, and Ben Tran, performed admirably but lost by split decision to McGehee in Round 1 before defeating Rummel in Round 2.
In individual awards, Sebastian Mac was named best witness. Congratulations.
