Golf Advances to Regionals with Low Man, Four Sub-80 Scores
The Jesuit golf team bounced back in a big way on Monday in the District IV Golf Tournament at Joseph M. Bartholomew Municipal Golf Course. The Blue Jays played neck-and-neck golf with St. Paul’s, took second place to advance to regionals, and finished well ahead of their Catholic League opponents.
With birdies on 3, 4, 15, and 18, junior Andrew Barreca was the individual tournament champion after posting 35 on both sides of the scorecard. Barreca’s two-under 70 gave Jesuit an 8-shot lead with four Blue Jays left on the course.
Jesuit’s No. 2 player, senior Britton Khalaf, went out with 36 and came in with 38. Khalaf’s two-over 74 increased Jesuit’s lead over St. Paul’s to nine strokes. No. 3 player, senior Jackson Maniscalco, carded a seven-over 79. St. Paul’s No. 3 player turned in a 72 to make things interesting with two groups remaining. Jesuit’s No. 4 player, senior John Bendernagel, matched Maniscalco with a 79 while his St. Paul’s opponent shot 77, leaving the Jays and the Wolves tied with one group remaining. Jesuit’s No. 5 player, freshman Merrick Rotolo, shot 82. St. Paul’s final player shot 76 to take the lead over Jesuit.
St. Paul’s 300 surpassed the Blue Jays’ score by two strokes. Brother Martin was 18 shots behind Jesuit, and Holy Cross finished 13 shots behind Brother Martin.
