Pinstripers Hit Final Stretch After Holy Cross Win

After Holy Cross earned a 3-2 series-opening win over Jesuit with a walk-off home run over the left-center field wall, the two teams met for Game 2 on Saturday, April 13, at John Ryan Stadium. And from its inning-by-inning numbers, the second game seemed to be just as tight as the first…until the bottom of the fifth inning.
Scoring five in inning five, the Blue Jays (21-8) were led on the front end by a Will Hellmers single and on the back end by a Luke Eccles sacrifice fly. Speedy sophomores Collin Loupe, Zack Casebonne, & Tripp Haddad and senior Brenden Berggren filled in the space with smart base running and scored via wild pitches. Joel Guerra scored the Jays’ final run of the inning.
Junior pitcher Will Hellmers (7-1) earned the complete-game victory. He gave up three runs on six hits and struck out one less than a dozen. Hellmers is 11 more strikeouts away from 100 on the season.

On the Horizon…
For Jesuit’s final district series, the Jays take on Rummel on Tuesday, April 16, at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium. Game 2 at John Ryan Stadium is set for Thursday, the 18th, at 2 p.m.
On the Catholic League train, Jesuit (8-2) sits in the driver’s seat. By sweeping Rummel, the Jays will clinch a 10-2 district record and remain at least one game ahead of the next best team.
