Oilers Look to Snag 10th Win Prior to Postseason

ShareJesuit’s American Legion baseball team, the Retif Oilers, has seen growth and leadership throughout the second half of the season. In their last four games, the Oilers have won two, lost a close one, and tied one.
Three of last year’s varsity starters—Tripp Haddad, Will Hellmers, and Brian Valigosky—and two newcomers round out the team’s top five hitting leaders, who have combined for 81 hits and 48 RBIs thus far. Rising junior Collin Loupe and senior John Carbo, who typically bat first and second in the lineup, are making the most of their opportunity as first-time starters. Parker Serio, sixth on that list, knocked a 3-run homerun to left field on June 25 for his 11th hit of the season. In that outing Retif held a comfortable 6-2 lead over the Curtis but eventually let the Patriots back into the game, which ended as a loss for Retif, 6-11. The Oilers (9-6-2) look to snag win #10 before opening postseason play on July 5.

On the Horizon…
The American Legion postseason, which starts with the City Series district tournament, will begin during the first weekend of July at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium. The City Series will clash Jesuit-based Retif Oil with Holy Cross-based Ponstein’s, Rummel-based Malcolm Dienes, and Lakeshore-based Bill Hood—all competing to advance to the state tournament. “One of the good things about Legion baseball is having a chance to compete with some really good teams and to win a championship,” head coach Kenny Goodlett said this week.
