In front of family, friends, and faculty, seniors Blake Baker and Brandon Sequeira officially made their commitments to play college baseball in New Orleans. Baker, a middle infielder, agreed to play for the University of New Orleans. Sequeira, who was recruited as a pitcher, is going to Tulane University. The signing ceremony took place on Wednesday, Nov. 20 in St. Ignatius Hall.

Baker hit .306 for Jesuit last year, which included seven doubles, three triples, and a pair home runs, primarily from the two hole in the order. He also swiped 13 bases. Baker is expected to bat lead off in 2014.

“Blake is blessed with outstanding speed and base running ability,” said head baseball coach Joey Latino. “He has the glove, range, and footwork necessary to compete at the next level,” Latino, who played baseball for UNO, added.

Over 12 innings in 2013, Sequeira recorded 12 strikeouts and posted a record of 2-0 with an ERA of 0.55. In summer Legion play, Sequeira pitched 34 innings, striking out 36. His record was 4-1 with an ERA of 2.47. In 2014, he will pitch and play infield for the Jays.

“Brandon has an outstanding glove, above average range, and exceptional arm strength,” said Latino. “In addition, he is a very intelligent player, and, more importantly, a very unselfish one.”

Sequeira joins fellow Blue Jay baseball players Briggs Barrios ’10 and Emerson Gibbs  and Matt Braud from the Class of 2012 at Tulane. Baker will team with Jesuit baseball alumni Mitch Alexander and Nick Schiro from the Class of 2012 and Michael Cusimano ’13.
