Former Blue Jay soccer players and their families took over Alumni Field and the Wally Pontiff, Jr. Pavilion at John Ryan Stadium on Saturday, Jan. 18, for a very successful 2020 Soccer Homecoming event.

“Wonderful day at John Ryan field today,” remarked soccer alumni representative Carlos Calix ’92 after the event. “We honored the ’99 and ’10 teams (not a loss between them). Impressive teams, impressive records, and impressive men! The Alumni match ended 1-1 with a penalty kick shootout in the end. Hats off to David DeHoog ‘83 (playing alongside his son Evan ‘14) for burying his PK and making it look easy! Sore muscles tomorrow, but I can’t wait for the next one! A.M.D.G.”

The Blue & White Alumni Game, a new tradition for Soccer Homecoming events, recreated the camaraderie and competitive spirit that Jesuit alumni felt throughout their time as members of the soccer program. Following the game, alumni and their families enjoyed a buffet lunch and a welcome program in Pontiff Pavilion. Then, alumni gathered with the current varsity players and head coach Hubie Collins to hear motivational words from athletic director Dave Moreau, who spoke on the importance of tradition, legacy, and selfless teamwork. The varsity Jays were inspired by the alumni presence in the huddle and ready to show their best stuff in the 1 p.m. district game against Rummel.

The pre-game ceremony honored the 20th anniversary of the undefeated 1999 state championship team and the 10th anniversary of the unbeaten 2010 state champions. Each player left with an anniversary certificate!
