Mu Alpha Theta Earns Individual and Team Honors in Brother Martin Math Tournament
Twenty-four Mu Alpha Theta students, under the leadership of seniors Liam Fitzgerald and Kevin Yokum, competed in the Brother Martin Math Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 18. Several Blue Jays took home individual honors. Sophomore John James placed fifth in Algebra II. Junior Mark James took home third place in Pre-Calculus. Senior Kevin Yokum earned a fifth place spot in Calculus BC.
In addition, team honors were awarded to the combined Algebra II/Pre-calculus team for a first place finish. The combined Algebra II/Pre-calculus team is comprised of sophomores Chalon Fogarty and Harrison Millar, and juniors Mark James and Collin Thibodeaux. The Calculus BC team, comprised of seniors Quinn Stiller, Andrew Nguyen, John Mitton, and Kevin Yokum finished in second place. Sophomores Chris Abadie, Andrew Vuong, and Anthony Stoner and senior Liam Fitzgerald formed the Open Division team, which finished in third place.
The Algebra II team of John James, Brady Stiller, Jose Cusco, and William Dowling finished second in the Math Bowl competition.
Honorable mention was awarded in the individual categories to sophomores Kenneth Krizan, Anthony Stoner, Jose Cusco, and Brady Stiller in Algebra II and juniors Collin Thibodeaux, Matthew Sentilles, Asad Mussarat, and William Tittle in Pre-Calculus.
Moderated by Ms. Jo Ann Schexnayder, Mu Alpha Theta is a national high school and junior college honorary mathematics club designed to meet the challenge of reaching out to academically talented students and turning them on to mathematics. Members are students who have completed four semesters of college preparatory mathematics and, in addition, have completed or are enrolled in a fifth semester mathematics course. The Jesuit club is one of many clubs in the Louisiana Mu Alpha Theta (LaMAΘ) state chapter.
