Wrestlers Claim Two Individual Titles En Route to Second Place State Finish

The Blue Jay wrestling team took second place in the 2014 LHSAA Division I State Wrestling Championships at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner. Two wrestlers — junior Ben D’Antonio (120) and senior Jake Eccles (170) — claimed individual state titles. D’Antonio defeated Archbishop Rummel’s Tyler Mire in a 3-1 decision, while Eccles downed Brice Duhe of Holy Cross in an 8-3 decision.

Senior Nicky Charles (113) and sophomore Guy Patron, Jr. (182) also helped lead the Jays to their second-place finish with runner-up showings of their own. Charles fell to top-seeded Mason Mauro of Brother Martin in the finals, while Patron was bested by the Crusaders’ Yehia Riles in a nail-biting, 4-2 match in overtime. Several other Blue Jays finished in the top 5 of their weight divisions.
