Jays Welcome the Tigers of Jesuit Tampa to John Ryan Stadium on Tuesday, March 18 at 7 PM

Following a good showing at their own banquet (the 3rd Annual Jesuit Invitational Tournament), the Jays’ varsity baseball team enjoyed a productive road trip at the Jay Patterson Shootout in Gonzales, winning all four of their games against some tough opposition.

The Jays pushed their record to 11-1 and hope to make it 12-1 on Tuesday, March 18 when they welcome the Tigers of Jesuit High Tampa to John Ryan Stadium. First pitch is 7 p.m.

Jesuit Tampa is on a road trip itself and brings a 10-2 record to New Orleans, where the Tigers will first play Newman on Monday, March 17 at the Greenies’ field uptown. The Tigers and the Jays will play under the lights of the Ryan on Tuesday with the first pitch at 7. Check back on Monday for details on admission to this all-Jesuit game.

At this weekend’s Jay Patterson Shootout, the Blue Jays sizzled on the mound as well as at the plate. Seniors Stephen Sigle (1B) walloped a solo home run and Blake Baker (2B) found his mojo bat. Several Jays continued their hot hitting streaks, with juniors Trent Forshag (C), Andy Galy (SS), and Dan Edmund (1B, DH) stripping some of the aluminum off the Jesuit bats. Seniors C.J. Avrard and Brandon Sequeira pitched complete games and each owns a 3-0 record.

In the first of their four games on Thursday, March 13, the Jays blitzed the Destrehan Wildcats, 10-2, as winning pitcher Glynn Hyer (1-1) had six strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings before sophomore Mason Mayfield finished off the ‘Cats. Forshag pounded the Wildcats with three RBIs and three hits, including a double. Galy turned in a near-duplicate performance: three singles, three RBIs. Baker had two hits, including a double. Also garnering two hits each were Edmund and seniors Spencer Miller (3B) and Brandon Sequeira (DH).

In Friday’s game, Jesuit trapped the St. Amant Gators, 3-1, behind the nifty pitching of Avrard, who gave up four hits while fanning seven. Sigle knocked one out of the park for a solo homer and Baker repeated his performance from the day before, nailing two hits, including a double.

In Saturday’s double-header, the Jays eked out a victory over Dutchtown, 3-2. Sequeira owned the mound with five strikeouts. Junior Scott Crabtree (LF) had two timely hits and one RBI. In the second and final game of the tourney, the Jays needed an extra inning to beat the Spartans of East Ascension, 3-1, before leaving for home. Winning pitcher was senior Christian Latino, who was summoned to the mound in the fourth inning and ended up with four strikeouts. Galy continued to dent his bat, hitting two solid doubles and notching an RBI. Edmund was also in the groove with two singles.

In addition to hosting Jesuit Tampa on Tuesday (March 17), the Jays play another four-game tournament beginning Thursday, March 20 and ending Sunday, March 23. The opening game of the Gerard Oubre Memorial Tournament will be a rematch against those Wildcats of Destrehan, but this time in the ‘Cats backyard. The tournament’s second game, on Friday, March 21, is also a rematch, but this time the Jays will play host at John Ryan Stadium to West Ouachita, the only team that beat them earlier in the season, a 1-0 shutout at Wesley-Barrow Stadium in the WGNO Classic. The Jesuit – W. Ouachita game gets underway at 6 p.m. Then on Saturday, it’s back on the road to Destrehan for the Jays who will play Central Lafourche. In the final game of the tourney on Sunday, the Jays play Hahnville on the Tigers’ field.

There is no doubt that Jesuit is a strong enough team to sweep all five of their games this week, one game at a time. Conceivably, Jesuit could be 16-1 when District play finally opens on Tuesday, March 25. That evening, at 7, the Jays will face the Raiders of Archbishop Rummel at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.
