The Blue Jays scored three runs on four hits in the fourth inning and survived a nail-biter seventh to shut out Rummel in the district opener on Tuesday evening (March 25) at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.
Senior Brandon Sequeira notched his fifth win of the season after pitching six innings in which he gave up three scattered hits while fanning five Raiders. Senior Glynn Hyer rescued Sequeira in the final inning after two Raiders reached first and second with no outs. Hyer retired three Raiders in succession to end the game and earn a save.
The Jays, accustomed to scoring early and often, had to be more patient against Rummel. For the first three innings, the Jays were shut down, and Rummel could do nothing either.
But in the fourth inning, second baseman Blake Baker led off with a double. Shortstop Alex Galy then singled, but Baker held at third base. Third baseman Spencer Miller cracked a double down the left field line, scoring Baker and advancing Galy to third. Catcher Trent Forshag drew a walk and Clayton Deron was sent in as a courtesy runner for him. Galy then scored to make it 2-0 when Scott Crabtree belted a single to center field. With no outs, Miller scored from third when first baseman Dan Edmund grounded into a double play. Jesuit’s other hit came off the bat of Harrison Daste, who was left stranded after hitting a double in the sixth inning.
The Jays (15-3 overall;1-0 district) have two days to prepare for a much-anticipated district game against Brother Martin on Friday (March 28). A large crowd of fans from both schools are expected to fill the grandstand and bleachers at John Ryan Stadium. First pitch is 7 p.m. Students, faculty, and staff will be admitted with their school IDs. Admission for adults is $5 and $3 for children (ages 6-11). Children under six are admitted free.
