Jesuit is saddened to announce the passing of Milton J. “Milt” Retif ’51, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 92. A beloved member of the Jesuit community, Retif was named the 1993 Alumnus of the Year for his lifetime of service and dedication to both the school and the city of New Orleans. Retif, an all-state shortstop, was instrumental in leading the Blue Jays to a state championship in 1950.

His athletic talents, however, were just one part of his enduring legacy.

Beyond his playing days, Retif became a pillar of support for amateur sports in New Orleans. He played a critical role in the development of Jesuit’s American Legion baseball program, sponsoring teams and mentoring young athletes. Through his company, he would go on to lend his name to the school’s summer team, Retif Oil & Fuel.

Retif’s philanthropy went beyond sports. Amongst other philanthropic endeavors, he established an Endowed Scholarship at Jesuit, ensuring future generations would share his own transformational experience.

His leadership helped Tulane University’s baseball program rise to national prominence. During his eight-year tenure as the Green Wave baseball coach marked by 123 victorious games, he continued to support athletic programs at local high schools. Retif’s passion for baseball also led him to organize exhibition games at the Superdome between Major League Baseball teams, benefiting several area schools and charities.

Retif’s commitment to Jesuit and his deep ties to the New Orleans community reflect the values of service and leadership he embodied throughout his life as a true man for others.

His two sons, the late Mickey Retif ’74 and Kenny Retif ’76, also attended Jesuit along with 13 of his grandchildren: James Barbara ’01, Daniel Barbara ’02, Ryan Retif ’04, Brandon Retif ’05, Travis Barbara ’05, Nicholas James ’08, John Barbara ’10, Bradley James ’11, Brian Barbara ’11, Jordan Retif ’11, Corey James ’13, Cole Retif ’16, and Ridge Retif ’19.

More information regarding arrangements and tributes will follow in the coming days.
