Marine Helicopters Touch Down on Will Clark Field
Two state-of-the-art helicopters from Helicopter Marine Light Attack Squadron 773 Det A, stationed at Naval Air Station New Orleans in Belle Chasse, made an unforgettable appearance on Jesuit’s Will Clark Field.
Jesuit’s MCJROTC, led by Lt. Col. Craig Himel ’91 and MGySgt J.R. Piseno, offered students and faculty an up-close view of military precision and technology. The showcase featured the USMC AH-1Z Cobra Attack Helicopter and the USMC UH-1Y Utility Attack Helicopter, both captivating onlookers as they soared over Will Clark Field.
The flight crew included a diverse range of ranks: one lieutenant colonel, two majors, one captain, two sergeants, and one corporal. Leading the flight was Major Daniel “Clifford” Houser, who piloted one of the UH-1Y helicopters. Landing these advanced aircraft on school grounds presented unique challenges, such as navigating around trees and power lines. To ensure safety, especially given the residential area, the helicopters performed their landings and takeoffs separately. The precision and skill exhibited by the pilots during these maneuvers underscored their expertise and professionalism.
Jesuit’s MCJROTC program holds a special place in history as the first of its kind in the nation. The visit from the Marine Corps helicopters serves as a testament to the unique and longstanding relationship between Jesuit and the United States Marine Corps since 1943, providing an enriching experience for all involved.
