In the second inning, Dan Edmund hits a sharp grounder to third base but the Wildcat overthrows his first baseman, allowing Edmund to make it all the way to third. The errant play also allowed the Jays to score two runs and take the lead, 2-1.

The Jays were sitting on an uncomfortable 3-1 lead over Central High of Baton Rouge going into the bottom of the fourth inning in Tuesday’s bi-district playoff game at John Ryan Stadium. The Jays pushed one run across home to make it a 4-1 ballgame. It was still an uneasy feeling for Coach Joey Latino and his players.
With the bases loaded and two outs, catcher Trent Forshag stepped up to the plate. He let the first pitch go by. Strike one. The Wildcats’ pitcher tossed a change-up and Forshag jumped all over it, hitting the ball deep into center field. Three runs score and Forshag stops at second base, a stand-up double under his feet and a wide grin radiating from ear to ear.
A timely hit that put the Jays out front, 7-1. And a fortuitous hit as well because the Wildcats came back in the sixth inning to score three runs, closing the gap to 7-4, which was the final score.
“Trent’s hit was huge, absolutely beautiful, and we needed that because obviously those first four runs were not going to stand up,” said Coach Latino. “I’ll give Central High some credit. They didn’t go away, they kept fighting. But it’s the playoffs and that’s what you’re gonna get. Nobody’s gonna give up. Everybody’s gonna fight to the last strike, the last out, because that’s what they’re supposed to do.”
Senior Brandon Sequeira pitched five innings and earned the win to improve his record to 8-1. He gave up three hits, two runs, and fanned five Wildcats. Senior Glynn Hyer came to the mound in the final two innings. He allowed four hits, two runs, and struck out two batters.
In addition to Forshag, Jesuit’s other big bats were wielded by Spencer Miller, who had two hits, including a double. Harrison Daste and Dan Edmund each hit singles that drove in a run. Sequeira also had an RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Jesuit (28-5) is seeded third in the Class 5A playoffs and will host Rummel in a best-of-3 regional playoff series this weekend, beginning Friday, May 2 at John Ryan Stadium. First pitch for Game 1 will be 6:30 p.m. Game 2 on Saturday, May 3 begins at 2 p.m. and, if necessary, Game 3 will be played at 7:30 p.m. All games this weekend will be at John Ryan Stadium. Rummel is seeded 19th, having defeated 14th seeded Hahnville, 5-3, in 10 innings.
Admission for each game is $5 for adults, students, and children (ages 6-11). Student IDs and season passes will not be accepted at the gate for any of the playoff games.
