Townsend Homes (St. Charles Catholic) arrived at John Ryan Stadium to play Retif Oil in an American Legion game on Thursday, June 12, but the visitors left early as Jesuit-based Retif scored 11 runs in four innings. It was Retif’s second consecutive shutout, one day after a 10-0 win over Ray Brandt Auto group (DeLaSalle).
A trio of Retif pitchers allowed only two hits and whiffed seven Townsend batters. Mason Mayfield started on the mound and earned the win, his second of the season. Sean Bretz pitched the 3rd and 4th innings. Each pitcher gave up one hit and struck out three batters. Glynn Hyer pitched the top of the 5th and got Townsend up and down, striking out one batter.
Retif’s offense exploded on Townsend Homes as shortstop Alex Galy went 3-for-3 with a single, double, and a triple. With the score 1-0 and the bases loaded, Galy walloped a fast ball into deep center field. As the center fielder chased the ball to the fence, all three base runners crossed home plate and Retif had a comfortable 4-0 lead at the end of the 2nd inning. Galy ended up with 4 RBIs. Meanwhile, catcher Trent Forshag had a single and double, along with one RBI. Third baseman Nick Ray hit a triple which was followed by Galy’s triple, the first consecutive “trips” for Retif this season.
Retif added one run in the 3rd inning and scored six more in the bottom of the 4th. The game ended on the 10-run rule after Townsend Homes batted in the top of the 5th and Retif was ahead, 11-0.
