A Gauthier & Amedee runner slides into home for the winning run Saturday, July 13, 2013 during Retif’s 9-8 loss in the opening round of the American Legion’s Southeast Regional Tournament at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

Reitf Oil (22-9) squared off with Gauthier & Amedee in the first game of the American Legion’s double elimination Southeast Regional Tournament on Saturday, July, 13.

Retif Oil quickly jumped to an early four-run lead in the top of the first. Mitch Alexander ’13 started the drive with a lead-off double before stealing third and scoring on a wild pitch.  Blake Baker ’14 crossed the plate on a sacrifice  grounder by Dylan Weston ’13. Then, Trent Forshag ’15  followed the sacrifice with a stand-up double to center field.  Gauthier & Amedee would walk the next three  batters scoring Forshag.  After the three straight three walks, Nathan Zimmer ’14 stepped up to the plate and singled to left field scoring Miller from third. Ben Hess ’14 looked to extend the lead but was called out on a close call at the plate.

Gauthier & Amedee in the third chipped away at the lead with two runs, but its threats were quickly silenced with three more runs from Retif in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 7-3.
After Gauthier & Amedee answered with a score in the bottom half of the fifth, Retif Oil tacked on another run in the seventh before Gauthier & Amedee closed the lead to four in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Retif headed into the bottom of the ninth inning with a comfortable 4-run lead. But this would prove not to be enough to the Gauthier & Amedee sluggers.  After two walks, a Gauthier & Amedee batter sent the pitch soaring over the right field wall to close the gap to just one. The game started to slide away from Retif with a walk and single to the left field. The final nail in the coffin proved to be a two-run double to left center field.

Retif sent three different pitchers to the mound but C.J. Avrard (3-3) was credited with the loss in his two inning of work.  Brandon Sequeira ’14 started the game and lasted for two and two thirds inning before Glynn Hyer ’14 took over in the third. Hyer struck out six batters in five innings.

Retif will play in a elimination game against St. Charles Catholic-based Townsend Homes on Sunday, July 14, 2013 at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium. First Pitch is for 9 a.m.
