Swimming Claims First Place in UNO Breast Cancer Invitational
The Jesuit swimming team turned in an outstanding performance when they captured first place at the UNO Breast Cancer Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 11. Jays took first place in 8 of 10 events, notching a team total of 469 — 175 points ahead of the second place finisher, Lusher Charter School.
Five individual events were won by Blue Jays. Senior Chris Simmons won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.19. Junior Cade Fuxan took the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.35. Sophomore Josh Armond placed first in the 200-yard freestyle with a finals time of 1:49.42. In the 100-yard backstroke, senior Francis Plough secured first with a time of 57.85.
The remaining three first place finishes were notched by the relay teams. The team of seniors Chris Simmons and Patrick Cecola, junior Cade Fuxan, and sophomore Jack Jackson secured first in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The winning 400-yard free team consisted of seniors Chris Simmons and Taylor Giorlando-Wall and sophomores Jack Jackson and Josh Armond. The 200-yard medley relay team of seniors Francis Plough, Sam Johnson, Patrick Cecola, and junior Cade Fuxan also posted a first place finish.
Several other Blue Jays turned in top five finishes, helping the team to its final score. Seniors Patrick Cecola and Taylor Giorlando-Wall took third and fourth, respectively, in the 100-yard freestyle. Sophomore Jack Jackson finished second in the 200-yard freestyle, just behind Josh Armond. Sophomore Seth Gunnels and junior Evan Dudenhefer took fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the 500-yard freestyle. In the 100-yard backstroke, juniors Brady Stiller and Matt Mount posted third and fourth place finishes. Junior Patrick Finegan came in second in the 100-yard butterfly. Junior Brady Stiller posted a second place finish in the 200-yard individual medley.
The Blue Jays return to action when they compete in a District Meet at UNO on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 4 p.m. From there, the team will swim in the Metro Preliminaries on Friday, Oct. 31 before heading to the Metro Finals on Saturday, Nov. 1.
