After Shutting Out Eagles, Soccer Jays Plan a Tiger Hunt

Undefeated in 3 District Matches, Jesuit and Holy Cross Meet for the First Time This Season on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at John Ryan Stadium

Jesuit’s varsity soccer team kicks off a match against Holy Cross on Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. at John Ryan Stadium. (Note that the time of the match has been moved up from its original time of 7 p.m.)

The Jays bring an 11-4-2 record to the mid-week match, and come off a 9-0 drubbing of Archbishop Shaw last Saturday, Jan. 3 at the Ryan. The match was preceded by a fun-filled reunion of Blue Jay soccer players.

The Jays – Eagles match was the second time the two teams skirmished. Jesuit has scored a total of 19 goals against Shaw this season, including 10 in the first match that took place Dec. 10 on the West Bank. The Jays’ other district game, against Rummel on Dec. 12, was also a shutout, 1-0.

Against the Eagles this past weekend, eight Blue Jays scored nine goals, beginning with Patrick Faherty’s wedge shot from some 20 yards out. Intended as a set-up play for teammate Dillon Fuchs, the stiff breeze caught Faherty’s kick, and the ball soared into the back corner of the goal. The shot came 15 minutes into what was a scoreless match, with the Jays controlling the ball and continuously poking, poking, poking at the Eagles’ defense.

Once Faherty’s ball found the net for that first goal, it opened the door for his teammates to score, including Chase Rushing, Dillon Fuchs (2 goals), Jack LaForge, Hunt Navar, Reed Barkate, and Collin Gillen. With an 8-0 halftime lead, head coach Hubie Collins cleared the bench for the rest of the match. In the second half, Brett Lozowski scored Jesuit’s final goal for the 9-0 win.

“Once I scored the first goal,” Faherty said, “it inspired my teammates to get some goals. It was a great confidence booster.”

Coming some 15 minutes into the match, Patrick Faherty's goal injects some inspiration into his teammates.
Chase Rushing passes to Patrick Faherty (29), who launches a chip shot intended to set up Dillon Fuchs (24) near the goal. But the wind carries the ball into the far reaches of the goal and the Jays open up a 1-0 lead. And Faherty is credited with the goal.
