Jays Open Soccer Playoffs with a 3-0 Shutout of John Ehret

Hunt Navar (19) airmails a fast ball past the outstretched arm of the Patriots’ goalkeeper and into the right side of the John Ehret goal to put the icing on the king cake in the Jays’ 3-0 shutout Friday afternoon at John Ryan Stadium.

Bulletin: Jesuit will host Grace King in a regional round playoff match on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. at John Ryan Stadium. Admission for this playoff game is $6 each for adults, students, and children (ages 6-11). Student IDs will not be accepted at the gate for admission.

As the LHSAA soccer playoffs began with the bi-district round matches, all 32 teams are well aware of what’s at stake. Sixteen teams will have ended their seasons this weekend, while the other 16 continue on to the regional matches next week.

Jesuit is in the second group and will continue on.

The third-seeded Blue Jays shut out the 30th-seeded John Ehret Patriots, 3-0, Friday afternoon at John Ryan Stadium. But it wasn’t an easy match for the District 9-5A champion Blue Jays. While Jesuit controlled the game from the opening whistle, the Jays could not convert numerous opportunities.

And three minutes into the match, the Jays’ leading scorer and junior captain, Chase Rushing, sustained an injury after a collision with the Patriots’ goalkeeper. Rushing was ok, but he watched the rest of the match from the bench. Later in the match, Jesuit defensive back Michael Pou had to leave the game after injuring his hand.

It wasn’t until the 29th minute that Jesuit broke open the scoreless game when Chris Pitre kicked a loose ball into the Patriots’ goal. The Jays’ 1-0 halftime lead looked tenuous, until the opening minute of the second half. Dillon Fuchs’s shot on goal bounced back and Patrick Rye, playing in place of Rushing, was in the right place at the right time, sending a shot under the goalkeeper to put the Jays up 2-0. It was Rye’s first goal and couldn’t have come at a better time.

Then, in the 58th minute, another shot by Fuchs bounced off the sidepost, and this time Hunt Navar was in place to follow-up with a zinger that buried itself into the back of the net, the ball barely escaping the outstretched arm of the horizontal Patriots’ goalie.

Following the match, Jesuit coach Hubie Collins told Nola.com’s Sam Tabachnik: “We didn’t get frustrated (about the lack of scoring in the first 40 minutes). We’ve played enough games this year where teams have come out and played a little bit more defensive and I thought Ehret was like that today. They were very tightly organized defensively and sometimes in games like that you have to show patience and I think we did that.”

The Jays are 18-4-4 and will play the 14th-seeded Irish of Grace King on Thursday, Feb. 12 at John Ryan Stadium. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. Grace King defeated 19th-seeded Central Lafourche, 5-1, to advance to the regional round. In their third-to-last match of the regular season, the Jays shut out Grace King, 3-0.

The Blue Jays will play the 14th-seeded Irish of Grace King in a quarterfinals match on Thursday, Jan. 12 at John Ryan Stadium, time of kickoff to be determined. Grace King defeated 19th-seeded Central Lafourche, 6-1. The Jays played Grace King in their third-to-last match of the regular season, shutting out the Irish, 3-0.

Patrick Rye, a junior midfielder who plays offense and defense, assumed command when his teammate Chase Rushing had to leave the game due to an injury. In the first minute of the second half, with the Jays clinging to a tenuous 1-0 lead, Rye notched his first goal as a varsity Blue Jay. Rye punched in a shot from six yards out to give the Jays a 2-0 lead and some much-needed breathing room.
