The Blue Jays have plenty of ground to make up after one round of play at the LHSAA Boys’ Division I State Golf Tournament in Carencro.

In golf leaving a small divot is beneficial. Biting off too much ground is not recommended. The latter is exactly what the Jesuit golf team did on Monday, May 4, posting a first-round score of 326 at the LHSAA Division I Boys’ State Golf Tournament.

The eight-team event is taking place at Farm D’Allie Golf Club in Carencro.

C.E. Byrd of Shreveport sits atop the leader board with a score of 291 — a whopping 35 strokes ahead of Jesuit. Catholic is second at 309, while Barbe and St. Thomas More are tied for third position with scores of 310.

Junior Grant Glorioso shot a 78 to lead all Blue Jay scorers. Sophomore Sean Donovan was one stroke back at 79. Junior Carlo Carino finished with 84, while sophomore Nolan Lambert tallied an 85. Freshman Grayson Glorioso’s 86 did not count toward the team total.

The state’s top golfer, Philip Barbaree of Byrd — an LSU signee — blistered the course with a 68.

Other teams competing for the state’s top prize are Dutchtown, St. Paul’s, and West Monroe. At this point, it’s Byrd’s tournament to lose.

Jesuit qualified for the state event by finishing first at the Division I – Region II Tournament in Springfield. The Jays shot a 305 on the David Toms course at Carter Plantation on April 29.
