Bulletin: The Retif Oilers beat three teams on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (June 18-20) in the Summer Slam Tournament to advance to the semifinal game which is scheduled Sunday, June 21, at 10:15 a.m. at Tigue More Field on ULL’s campus in Lafayette. The Oilers will face Gauthier-Amedee with the winner advancing to the championship game immediately following to play the winner of the other semifinal game. Check the website for the results.

Facing Peake BMW for the second time this season last Wednesday (June 17) at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium, the Retif Oilers were in a daze for the first five innings and down 3-0 before pulling out a come-from-behind 5-3 win for their eighth consecutive victory.

Brother-Martin-based Peake had a 3-0 lead and a no-hitter going until the fateful sixth inning when the Oilers’ Blue Jay bats finally woke up. Retif scored all five runs in the inning on five hits from five Oilers: Dan Edmund and Hayden Fuentes each hit a double while singles were off the bats of Stephen Sepcich, Trent Forshag, and Jake Licciardi.

Davis Martin started and pitched three innings, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out two batters.

“We were lacking on the intensity side and I told the guys to stick with it,” said Coach Joey Latino. “This is a tremendous group of guys. They battled and we didn’t have much to show for it after five frames. But they kept sticking to the process and kept battling, and we were able to get it done in the sixth.”

Retif used five pitchers, starting with Davis Martin, who lasted three innings. Martin allowed three hits, one run, and struck out two batters. David Boh came in for two innings, giving up two runs on three hits, and one strikeout. Connor Maginnis and Brandon Briuglio pitched two-thirds of an inning with the latter getting a couple of outs. The final pitcher was Mason Mayfield, who came in for the final four outs, but not before Peake notched one hit.

“We’re coming along,” said Coach Latino. “This is a very solid group of kids and I mean that in terms of character. We know talent is there and character-wise, this is a very good group of kids. Once we start putting it together, all the little pieces, we’re gonna be fine.”

The Oilers will return from a busy and exhausting weekend of tournament play to take on Otto Candies on Monday, June 22, in Hahnville, not at John Ryan Stadium as reported in an earlier version of this article (sorry!). First pitch is still at 5 p.m. On Tuesday, June 23, Retif travels to Mandeville to play LLOG at 6:30 p.m. And Wednesday, June 24, Retif plays Ponstein’s at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium at 7 p.m.
