First-round matches of the LHSAA state tennis tournament, postponed because of persistent rain on Wednesday, began at 8 a.m. on Thursday, May 2. Percipitation was still a problem on Thursday. Weather permitting, final matches will be played on Friday, May 3. All matches are being played on the campus of the University of Louisiana-Monroe. Three of Jesuit’s varsity seniors are defending state champions — Hobie Hotard in singles, and Trevor Lew and James Sampognaro in doubles. Hotard is trying to become the first Louisiana high school boy to win four consecutive singles’ titles. Because of the rain, tournament officials decided to tweak the rules. Players are using what’s called “no ad scoring,” in which games are limited to a total of seven points.
