Seniors Jose Aleman and Patrick Rye scored goals as Jesuit’s varsity soccer team opened its season with a 2-0 shutout of the Newman Greenies at John Ryan Stadium.

After controlling the tempo throughout the first 33-plus minutes of the first half, the Blue Jays finally broke into the scoring column at the 6:20 mark on Aleman’s goal, which came off an assist from senior Ethan Camet.

There was no such wait in the second half. Less than two minutes in, Rye out jumped Newman’s goalie to drill a header into the net off a perfect corner kick from junior Christopher Pitre.

“I saw some positive things out there tonight,” said coach Hubie Collins. “I’m optimistic for the season.”

Next up for Jesuit is a Saturday afternoon date with the Ben Franklin Falcons. Game time is 1:00 p.m. at Ben Franklin.
