Jesuit’s cheerleading team finished second at the 2015 LHSAA State Competition.

The 2015-16 Jesuit cheerleading squad placed second at the 2015 LHSAA State Cheer Competition in Monroe, Louisiana. The event took place on Saturday, Nov. 21, just hours after Jesuit’s squad fired up fans at the Jesuit vs. Rummel football playoff game at Joe Yenni Stadium. The group participated in the Varsity Co-ed division.

“I couldn’t be prouder of our kids,” said Br. William Dardis, S.J. ’58, who moderates the group. There are currently 21 students on the team — eight boys and 13 girls who come from Catholic schools across the City. The team is coached by Mrs. Jenny Johnston, who doubles as the friendly face and voice at the Jesuit switchboard.

This year’s team is led by two outstanding seniors, Joey Bongiovanni and Riley Reynolds of Mount Carmel Academy. “Their ongoing dedication to their team and to Jesuit High School has helped make the team what it is today. It is an honor and privilege to be their coach,” said coach Johnston.

Jesuit cheerleaders put in many long hours of hard work and dedication. Their rigorous routine begins in the spring and continues throughout the summer and into the school year. On top of preparing to compete in the state competition, these young men and women promote an exhilarating school spirit that can be felt from the city of New Orleans all the way to the Emerald Coast.

Up next for the squad is cheering at basketball games and parading with the Blue Jay Marching Band and Jayettes.
