On Tuesday morning, Dec. 8, students, faculty, and staff gathered for Mass in the Chapel of the North American Martyrs to celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in honor of Mary, the school’s patroness. Students dressed in coat and tie for the occasion.

Mass was celebrated by Fr. John Brown, S.J. Concelebrating were Frs. Mark Thibodeaux, Anthony McGinn, Kevin Dwyer, Norman O’Neil, and Don Saunders, all members of the Society of Jesus. Fr. Thibodeaux, who serves as novice director for Jesuits in formation, brought six first-year novices, including alumni Jordan Jones ’01 and Alex Coffey ’11, to participate in today’s Mass.

In his homily, Fr. John Brown, S.J. calls for us to remember that Mary’s Immaculate Conception was the first step in God’s plan to love us by joining us and inviting us to both receive and share His mercy.

When the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) established a new high school in New Orleans in 1847, they placed it under the protection of our Blessed Mother. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception celebrates Mary’s conception, without sin, and is always on December 8.
