Jesuit’s soccer team rebounded from a disappointing loss in their final game of pool play to salvage a third place finish in the 33rd St. Paul’s Invitational on Dec. 29 in Covington.

Jesuit opened the tournament with back-to-back 4-0 shutouts of Hahnville and St. Thomas More on Dec. 28. They entered their final pool play game against Grace King on the morning of Dec. 29 needing only a tie to advance to a finals showdown with host St. Paul’s. Unfortunately, the Jays were only able to find the net once against the Fighting Irish and lost by a score of 2-1.

Senior captain Chase Rushing then took a tired and disappointed squad on his shoulders, scoring both goals in a 2-1 overtime victory over Destrehan to claim third place.

Also chalking up goals during the tournament were senior Jose Aleman (3), senior Patrick Rye (2), senior Grant Lazier (1), junior Christopher Pitre (1), senior Cole Retif (1), and senior Ethan Camet (1). Camet, a defender, rarely gets to score, but took an opportunity off a deflected corner kick to rocket a 25-yarder into the net for Jesuit’s only goal in the loss to Grace King.

The Jays are now 14-3 on the season. Next up is a Monday, Jan. 4 contest with the John Ehret Patriots. Game time is 3:30 p.m. at John Ryan Stadium.
