Trip to Big D Prepares Lacrosse for District Play
The Jesuit lacrosse team returned from a weekend trip to Dallas with two victories, a pair of losses, and a busload of confidence as players prepare for the district season.
On Saturday, Jan. 30, the Blue Jays beat Colleyville, 6-5, but lost to tournament host Jesuit College Prep, 9-6. On Sunday, Jan. 31, the Jays mowed down Flower Mound, 12-3, before falling to Plano West, 7-4. All four opponents are from Texas.
Senior and captain Max Murret had a goal and three assists in the game against Colleyville. Senior Sammy Martin had three takeaways and picked up two ground balls to lead the defensive effort. Senior goalie Rob Hinyub recorded 11 saves.
Murret had a pair of goals in the game against Dallas College Prep. Seniors Kent Flower and Thomas Cassagne and Juniors Noah Martin and Michael Smart scored the other Jesuit goals. Martin, senior Gray Cressy and junior Parker Simoneaux each scooped up four ground balls. The Blue Jays won just 4 of 15 face-offs. Hinyub saved 13.
In Sunday’s game against Flower Mound, senior Dominic Sunseri and junior Parker Simoneaux had three goals apiece. Junior Briggs Lucia scored twice. Sunseri, Simoneaux, and junior Bennett Faust picked up a total of ten ground balls. Juniors Will Crumley and Jeremy Hamilton each had two takeaways. Junior Grant Stevens had four saves in goal.
In the 7-4 loss to Plano West, Murret scored a goal, chipped in with an assist, and forced five turnovers. Sunseri, Smart, and Noah Martin scored the other Jesuit goals. Sammy Martin picked up six ground balls, while Gray Cressy scooped up four. Hinyub recorded ten saves in the finale.
After Sunday’s games, the lacrosse squad and their families attended Mass before boarding the team bus and heading home.
Jesuit opened the season with a 10-3 win over Spain Park of Alabama, giving the Blue Jays a 3-2 season record.
The Jays won’t play again until Feb. 13, when they’ll be in Houston for weekend games against Strake Jesuit and Friendswood.
