Lacrosse Jays Post a Win in Two Cities on the Same Day
Ernie Banks, the famous Chicago Cub who uttered the now famous words, “Let’s play two!,” would be extra proud.
The Jesuit lacrosse team played single games in separate cities on Saturday, Feb. 20, and returned home with two more victories in their travel bags. First they beat Loyola Academy (Shreveport), 16-1, in a game that was played in Alexandria. Then, they drove to Lafayette to face St. Thomas More. The Jays won the second contest, 14-4.
Jays 16 Loyola 1
Against Loyola, senior Max Murret scored four goals and junior Michael Smart had three. Senior Kyle Westholz and juniors Briggs Lucia and Noah Martin had two goals apiece. The other goals were scored by senior Kent Flower, sophomore Aiden Roberts, and junior Parker Simoneaux. Martin and Sunseri each had three assists.
Simoneaux scooped up seven ground balls. Five of them were on face-offs. Senior Gray Cressy led the defensive effort with four ground ball pick-ups and two takeaways. Sunseri tallied three ground balls.
Senior Rob Hinyub was stellar in goal, giving up just a single score while saving 11. The Jays won 13 of 18 face-offs and scored six of the eight times that penalties called against the opposition gave the Jays a man-up advantage.
Jesuit 14 St. Thomas More 4
Murret, who is a team captain, scored another four goals against St. Thomas More. Sunseri and Simoneaux scored twice against the Cougars. Luccia, Martin, Westholz and senior Jeremy Scheffler had the other goals. Martin also had two assists.
