Jesuit’s track and field team entered the 41st Annual Cardinal Relays on March 21 at E. D. White Catholic High in Thibodaux on a high after capturing fourth place in a 44-team field just two days earlier at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Track & Field Classic.

This time, coach Richard Bohn gave some new folks a chance to shine, particularly in the track events.

Senior John James scored the team’s only first place in the competition, posting a time of 10:07.24 in the 3200-meter race. Junior Luke Malter placed sixth in that race with a time of 10:39.42 (the 3200 is an event in which the Blue Jays have some serious depth: senior Carlos Zervigon won that race in the Sugar Bowl meet with a blistering time of 9:52.59).

Together, James and Malter earned 11 points toward Jesuit’s team total of 60, good enough for a fifth-place overall finish. In track and field meets, the Top Six finishers in each event score points for the team, with first-place finishers earning 10 points, followed by second (8), third (6), fourth (4), fifth (2), and sixth (1).

Also scoring for the Jays in track events as individuals were junior Richmond Wall (4th-place, 200-meter dash), junior Max Bell (4th-place, 400-meter dash, senior Nick Slay (6th-place, 400-meter dash),  junior Justin Guerin (4th-place, 800-meter run), sophomore Timmy Stahel (5th-place, 800-meter run), and junior Hayden Ricca (6th-place, 1600-meter run).

Jesuit also picked up points in the relays. The Jays finished 3rd in the 4×400 meter relay, 5th in the 4×100 relay, and 6th in the 4×200 meter relay.

In the field events, there was at least one familiar name from the Sugar Bowl meet. Junior Jaron Larriviere finished second in the discus with a throw of 120-04, besting by a foot histop throw from Saturday, which had earned him a 5th-place finish in that meet. Larriviere also placed 5th in the javelin with a throw of 128-09.

In the pole vault, junior William Lopez and sophomore Evan Alphonso each cleared 9-06, earning second and third place, respectively.

The team hits the track again on April 1 for the Crusader Relays.
