Jesuit baseball dropped a tough district game against Holy Cross on Saturday, March 26 when the Tigers hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning that scored the winning run. The 4-3 walk-off win by Holy Cross was Jesuit’s second district loss in three games.
Brandon Briuglio started on the mound for the Jays and pitched four full innings. He gave up two runs on four hits. He walked two batters and struck out four. He was relieved by Todd Crabtree in the last three innings. Crabtree allowed two runs on two hits, with no walks. He struck out two Tigers. Crabtree got pegged with the loss. He is 1-2 on the mound.
None of the Tigers’ four runs were earned as the Jays committed four errors. The Jays left eight runners stranded, including a second inning bases loaded with one out scenario that yielded nothing.
The Jays had seven team hits. Connor Maginnis knocked two singles and Josh Schmidt hit a single and a huge double in the sixth inning that scored a pair of runs to give the Jays a 3-2 lead. But the Tigers evened things in the bottom of the sixth and when the Jays could not muster a rally in the top of the seventh, Holy Cross plated a run on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Nick Ray hit a double and Briuglio and Stephen Sepcich each had a single.
The Jays are 14-6 overall (1-2 in district). Jesuit plays St. Augustine on Tuesday, March 29, at RBI Field on Press Drive (formerly Wesley Barrow Stadium). First pitch is 6 p.m.
